A barn conversion

The classic design of simple elegance is something that never goes out of style, and there’s nothing more classic than a farm house. Rick Joy Architects designed the epicWoodstock Farm house with a less-is-more concept that works so well.

At one end the stone wall is a warm feature of the living area: a built-in fireplace and sofa facing the wall, where family members can admire the beauty and heat.

From outside, the house is large yet modest with a traditional long-rectangular shape and steeply sloped roof. The brick and stone façades give it a very conservative and old-fashioned charm, with just a hint of modern thought in the windows, which are placed high and angle upward in contention with the strict lines of the roof.

Tying the history of the old Vermont barn house exterior with the modern interior, the designers left the stone façades of the end walls exposed to the inside of the home. The stone is not only beautiful, but it adds a sense of history.

At the opposite end, the stone wall becomes a charming accent in the master bathroom, with a hearth serving as a bench or shelf next to the freestanding soaking tub. As a complement to the stone wall, the tub’s faucet and fixtures have been housed in a small and separate stone column positioned next to the tub.

While the shape of the interior of the barn house closely resembles the outer structure, with an open floor plan and cathedral ceilings, there is a stark contrast between the largely wood-clad wall and ceiling panels, the black beams that interrupt, and the stone walls at either end.

From every room you are reminded of the contemporary simple form of
the house. No complex floor plan interrupts the solid flow of
the rectangle frame or the sloping roof. An ample amount of
natural light infiltrates the rooms and invites the tenants to appreciate
the simple elegance of the residence while at the same time admiring
the beauty of the Vermont landscape that engulfs them.
